Help bring sustainable water to Langmi Village
Share our campaign
Melting glaciers have created a water crisis in Langmi Village.
Located deep in the Himalayas in India's Zanskar Valley, at 12,000 feet it is one of the highest places on earth inhabited by humans. It is also experiencing some of the most dramatic impacts from climate change.
The rapid melting of glaciers, retreating snowlines, and prolonged drought in Langmi have led to a water crisis. There is little remaining water to irrigate crops and feed their livestock. Most of their fields now lay barren and only a few sheep, goats, and cattle remain. The village food reserves, built up over many decades, are now almost empty.
Without support, hundreds of farmers in Langmi will be forced to abandon their centuries-old village, becoming displaced migrants. They will not only lose their homes and livelihoods, but also the social support their close-knit community provides.
Our Plan
Working with our local partner, Navikarana, we will install a solar water pump to bring water from the Zanskar River to the community reservoir in Langmi. It is an ambitious project that will transport water almost one mile to the village. We have completed successful projects in nearby villages using the same approach.
Originating deep in the mountains, the Zanskar River is fed by more abundant and larger glaciers than exist above Khasar. Even with climate change, water will continue to flow in the Zanskar well beyond this century and can provide a sustainable source of water to Langmi Village.
Langmi Village is part of our larger Zanksar Water Initiative. Our goal is by 2028 all villages in the Zanskar Valley will have long-term access to water for agriculture, drinking, and household use.
We need to raise funds by June 30 to complete the project this summer.
